The Houston Texans are gearing up to face the Kansas City Chiefs after defeating the Los Angeles Chargers, entering the matchup as underdogs. However, being underestimated is nothing new for this team.
Former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, known for his bold personality and strategic insights, shared his thoughts on the Texans before their wild-card showdown. Ryan, who has never shied away from expressing his opinions, voiced concerns about the Texans’ performance leading up to the playoffs.
He criticized their offensive line, which had been disrupted by injuries and lacked the necessary chemistry for postseason success. Additionally, Ryan pointed out the struggles on defense, particularly in the secondary, which had been exposed by strong passing offenses. However, his remarks took a dismissive turn when he claimed that the Chargers essentially had a “bye week” against the Texans due to Houston’s perceived weaknesses. In reality, it was the Texans who capitalized on the Chargers’ shortcomings, delivering a commanding performance.
After the game, Texans players made sure to let Ryan know how they felt about his comments.
By Sunday morning, following Houston’s dominant 32-12 victory over the Chargers in the AFC wild-card round, Ryan admitted he had been wrong. With a touch of humor, he remarked, “Who had a worse day, me or Justin Herbert?” Acknowledging the Texans’ efforts, he added, “You’ve got to give credit where it’s due – that team played their absolute hearts out.” Ryan even joked, “If you guys were going to play like that, I would’ve picked you to win the Super Bowl!”
He ended with a lighthearted apology: “Sorry, Houston. But I’m not picking you next week either! Or maybe I will.”
Regardless of his comments, Houston fans are sure to have the last laugh.
